Some Thoughts On: Future Plans
spacer

Tim Lease
Over the holidays, I had the opportunity and pleasure of seeing The Apollo 11 special exhibit. As a kid, I remember watching the TV coverage of this amazing feat of landing on the moon. Being a kid, it was hard to comprehend the magnitude of this accomplishment. As I went through the exhibit, I took in the details, and I left in total awe of this unprecedented accomplishment of a group of many. Just to think it only took 42 years from the first flight across the Atlantic to being able to land on and return from the moon is amazing! Buzz Aldrin was later quoted noting “Nothing is impossible, but you must have a passion for what you want to do and a plan where you want to go if you ever hope to get there.” How appropriate this wisdom is as we approach a new year! My plan for 2019 may not be as lofty, but I am inspired and committed to instilling a passion and enthusiasm in both my business and personal plans. What are your plans? I would enjoy hearing them.

THANK YOU!

Ask the Expert
Purchasing, Expediting and Logistics
Send your question to our team of experts.
Q"What are the important components of purchasing?"
– A.C.

AA.C., as an EPC company, WL Port-Land Systems, Inc. is responsible for all activities from design, procurement, project management, construction, commissioning, and the handover of the project to the end-user or owner. Purchasing is actually composed of procurement, expediting and logistics. All three play important roles in every project. Over the years, we have developed an extensive supplier and subcontractor base which has positioned us well to meet project deadlines in the various industries we serve.

Purchasing, a main driving component and force, is the process of selecting vendors and/or subcontractors for the furnishing of required materials, components, equipment, supplies, and the necessary field labor to meet contractual job schedules. This effort includes the establishment of payment terms and a delivery timeline along with administering the related purchase order/subcontract terms and conditions. It’s important to note each purchase should be available at the right location, the right time, the right quality per project specifications, and at the right price. Project procurement relies heavily on outsourcing. Outsourcing is a way of optimizing resources within a given project and adapting to budget constraints and schedule challenges. Planning is the first step in managing the procurement effort. It involves working extensively in conjunction with the job and requisition schedules developed. During this time, the project delivery group decides which parts of the project will come from internal or external sources. While performing this analysis by reviewing the project scope and work schedule, the long lead time items should be clearly identified. This process creates the framework for which all other processes are driven. As we begin to procure material, equipment, and subcontracts, this is where the expediting function and logistics come in to play.

Expediting is key to every construction project success. This involves coordinating with suppliers on a regular basis to insure they will meet the contracted delivery dates. During this time, we monitor a number of things such as the approval drawing process, the dispatch of material, inspection coordination. Status reports are issued to project management and field personnel to assess situations, monitoring supplier performance, and make necessary recommendations. If delivery delays do occur, we work to implement quick counter measures to avoid any further setbacks.

Once the expediting is complete, this is where the transportation and logistics role begins. Working with third party logistic providers (3PL’s) who are sometimes known as freight brokers, we are able to effectively manage our freight costs and improve services while meeting job schedules. The technology used today has enabled us to stay in direct communication with the actual carriers for real time updates on deliveries, which is key. Every project is unique and every project site is different. This effectively means that for every project, the purchasing, expediting, and transportation functions must be analyzed for proper optimization and the completion of deliverables.

Our group is committed to providing optimal results for our customers. We welcome any opportunity to be of service to you. Please direct all purchasing inquiries to vmarze@wlport-land.com.

…The global population will increase from 7.6 billion today to 9.7 billion in 2050. Most of this growth will be in developing countries. This increase of global economic growth by about 2.9% annually will require continuous increases in the market demand for food. Demand for grains, for both food and animal feed, is projected to reach 3 billion tons by 2050, up from 2.1 billion in 2009. Meat production will increase 200 million tons to 470 million tons during the same time period.

Feeding a world population of over 9 billion people in 2050 will require an increase of food production by up to 70 percent between 2007 and 2050.
